Learning about a new culture is always fun and at times surprising!
While walking through Fredericksberg Have (garden/park) we found this spooky tree with hundreds of dummies (tétines) hung on its branches.
And when one doesn't speak the language very well, oftentimes one has to guess the purpose of its discoveries.
Two options in this case:
- either the tree was the bearer of the memory of still-born babies,
- or, and fortunately that would be the case, the tree would represent the parents' relief that their babies are babies no more and that they finally gave up their long-loved dummy! After investigating further and chatting with a Danish mother we learned that this tree is indeed a way of saying goodbye to dummies!!
Original if not disgusting.
