While working on a new blog article with the backdoor open in front of me I heard some strange noises definitely coming from an animal. I obviously went out to check what it was when I saw this little chap in the trees above me. Bright red against the bright blue sky. With its beautiful furry ears this little red squirrel clearly felt in danger, waving its tail and making alarm calls that sounded like repetitive 'kuk kuk kuk'. These were clearly warning calls; this squirrel is part of a couple I regularly see around this big tree but never managed to photograph them!
Squirrels make warning calls to tell their predators that they saw them but also to warn other squirrels of the present danger. I was lucky enough to be able to grab my camera and shoot a series of images.
But what was scaring this gorgeous little red squirrel?
The neighbouring cat of course! With this cat, we're like good friends now. I see her almost every day. She's beautiful but also a fierce and very patient predator. She stayed there for a good 30mn, sort of ignoring the red squirrel doing its little dance. But as soon as the squirrel came down the tree a little she would quickly get into position for a good jump. She even jumped up the tree about 3 metres high, but there was no way she was going to catch the red squirrel 20 metres higher.
