Following the previous post, you are probably wondering what happens the night of the Tuborg Christmas Brew? Well, ladies and Gentlemen you're in for a treat!
But cautious!! For those of you who resent Christmas and everything that goes with it (songs and joy) DO NOT click the Play button below.
Although 'J-dag' (Julebryg day/Christmas Brew day) is huge in Denmark, very little information is available about it. All we knew is that it started at 2059 on the first Friday of November and that about 300 Tuborg employees dressed as white and blue Santa Claus would visit 400 bars offering free beer. (Some people even thought there would be women wearing white and blue bikinis, but that's a different story! :) )
"The locals seemed very perplexed when we asked about dancing smurfs giving away free beer."
So we ventured ourselves to the Nørrebro area which is the multi-ethnic/trendy/music bars/chill out part of Copenhagen.
We saw a few bars in a street called Blågårdsgade but no signs and no blue Christmas festivities were to be seen anywhere.
We approached the locals who seemed very perplexed when we asked about dancing smurfs giving away free beer.
Unphased, they eventually started to compete in trying to help us find the right spot to witness this crazy event. As they were pointing at various opposite directions we started to convince ourselves that maybe it was just a tourist trap. At 2050, 10 minutes before the show was supposed to kick off somewhere in the streets, we tried to refocus their attention to the fact that we had no time to travel to another part of the city and that we had to find a bar here, in this neighbourhood! Finally they sent us to St Hans Square, at the end of Fælledvej street, 2mn away. There it was... before our eyes: a bar with Julebryg banners!! Excited and ready to party we went in and saw... a quiet crowd of people sat at their tables chatting.
After further investigation we were told that the Christmas crew would pop in at some point in the evening. Meanwhile, we met a very nice couple, her from Canada and him from Sweden. We had a very nice time chatting away and drinking the Christmas brew, when suddenly it all happened! We saw it, we lived it and we loved it!
